NEWS OF RECENT EVENTS ATTENDED BY PYRFORD JUDO CLUB
PYRFORD
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008
Our annual Club Championships was
held on Saturday 15th November. It was a great success with
everyone that took part receiving a certificate and many going home with
medals. The day was an excellent example of our members showing great
technique, determination and respect for fellow competitors
The Open weight and club champions belt was won by Alwyn
Clarke for the 3rd year running. No one has ever achieved this
before. Well done
The sponsored throw in aid of “Help
for Heroes” was well supported with more than 25 people taking part.
Gabrielle Carney managed the most throws in 1 minute with a total of 32 !!! Closely
followed by Elizabeth Jamieson on 31.
Thank you to everyone that took part
and supported a very worthy charity. We will be collecting the money in over
the next few weeks and have set a deadline of 13th December for
this.
The Obi man photo competition was won
by Cameron Thomas for his Obi man on a river cruise with Tower Bridge in the
background
All the category results are below.
Well done to everyone that took part and thank you to the many people that
helped with the organisation and smooth running of the event or who donated
raffle prizes and other goodies. It just keeps getting better.
D
E Photography were in attendance and took many
fantastic photos. I know that a lot of people bought them on the day, but
they are all still available from their web site

BJA
NATIONALS FOR 12 YEARS+
On the
weekend of 11/12th October Pyrford had 7
players taking part in the British championships for 12-19year olds at Sheffield. On Saturday Michael
Dean had a tough group at u60kg being one of the youngest at his age band and
did not progress through the first rounds. Alwyn
Clarke in his new category of 73kg Lost his first
match to the eventual Silver medallist then won 2 more before missing out in
Golden score to take 7th place. Felix Berning had a great day in the 14-15yrs u46kg group confidently winning his
way through to the final where he met current champion Josh Hill. Felix
fought a superb fight, coming close to scoring on several occasions but just
getting caught for a Koka, giving him the Silver medal. Great performance
More good stuff on Sunday. Catherine Jamieson was on excellent form having just moved up to 52kg at this event. She
won 3 matches decisively to make the final against Emma Reid from the East.
Catherine scored several times and despite a refereeing “howler”
where she was holding her opponent down and Matte was called!!!!!!!!!! She
won by a comfortable margin and is now National Champion at 12-13yrs 52kg
Katie Dean had a
strong start as well winning all of her matches by Ippon
to get to the final of the 78kg 16-19 yrs. Here she had another close contest
with Fiona Jones from Wales. Although Katie applied all the positive Judo and attacking she was manouvered out of the mat area several times and was
eventually given Shido which decided the match
giving her Silver
Sarah Benktander had a tough u48kg category. Her first match was against Sophia Coles
who went on to take Gold. Sarah then produced a huge throw in her next match
to give her a Bronze medal fight against Megan Moore. Sarah dominated the
first half of the fight with Megan being given 2 shidos
for false attacking. The scores were then levelled and went to golden score.
In this period Sarahs opponent consistently dropped
to her knees and grabbed her ankle preventing Sarah from attacking properly
which gave her a shido penalty and 5th
place
Jade Ledingham was giving away so much weight in the
+63category that it was an uphill struggle for her. She fought in very good
spirits and came away smiling. Well done Jade.
Well done
to everyone. 3 National finalists and more importantly some
excellent stylish Judo.
SURREY LEAGUE

BJA
NATIONALS FOR 10 + 11 YEAR OLDS
On Sunday
5th October the BJA Nationals for 10 + 11 year olds were held at Wallsall. Pyrford had 2 players
taking part. Elizabeth
Jamieson and Lucy Maurer both competing at under 28kg. Elizabeth won her first 2 contests comfortably but then just lost on a koka. Lucy won her first 3 contests with some nice Judo.
This however put both girls together in the semifinal,
where Elizabeth was the one to move on to the final. She had to refight the match that
she had earlier lost and gave it a really good go. She was dominating for
most of the contest although there was no score, and about a minute into golden score got caught
with an osoto gari that
ended the match. Elizabeth
took Silver and Lucy took Bronze.
Well done .. 2 more National medallists for Pyrford
BLACK
BELT FOR ALWYN
On
Saturday 4th October whilst winning the Gold medal at the High

confirmed as a 1st Dan. (Subject to verification by the BJA’s Dan grade registrar) Another excellent
achievement at just 15 years old
WELSH
SENIOR OPEN
On
Saturday 4th October Katie Dean took part in the Welsh Open in Cardiff. The under 78’s was a tough group with Katie winning her first 3

was won by Sam Lowe
Another
good result for Katie, she is now establishing herself as one of the
country’s top senior u78kg players
