END OF TERM AND OBI TOURNAMENT

On Saturday 24th July it was our end of term. We held our Obi Tournament for each class. It was well attended with everyone fighting extremely well. Stevie Warr in the 1230 class is still leading those that are still eligible to compete. He has 138 points which gives his Obi man his 8th Dan.                                                                                   Alwyn Clarke is still the highest scorer ever with 151 points and 10th Dan

BLACK BELT FOR MICHAEL

On Saturday 17th July Michael Dean took part in the National Dan Grading held at High Wycombe. Going in to the event he needed 20 points and he sailed through to get 30 points and his 1st Dan. Having previously completed the technical requirement he can now wear his Black Belt.

Neil Schofield collected the rest of his points required for his 2nd Dan and just needs to complete his technical demonstrations to make it official

WESTERN AREA JUNIOR OPEN

On Sunday 11th July the Western Area Open was held at Swindon

Pyrford just had Elizabeth Jamieson competing. In her first event at under 40kg she found herself with just one other in her category who she beat with an Ippon throw to take the Gold in her category. She then went on to compete against three others in the u44kg group. Giving away a huge amount of weight she used a number of different techniques to throw and hold all of her opponents and take the Gold at 44kg also

SURREY LEAGUE THIRD ROUND

At the third round of the Surrey League competition held in Redhill on Sunday 4th July Pyrford had 14 players competing with 5 Golds .. 1 Silver and 6 Bronzes  being won

HAMPSHIRE OPEN

On Sunday 4th July the Hampshire Open was held in Portsmouth

Alwyn Clarke had a fantastic day first winning Gold in the under 73kg mens category then going on to take Silver in the Open weight group

Prior to this in the morning Alwyn had taken his Area referees exam at the event and passed with flying colours


KENT INTERNATIONAL

On Saturday 26th June the Kent International was held at Crystal Palace.

Elizabeth Jamieson had a fantastic day throwing all of her opponents for Ippon on the way to the final  of the under 36kg Orange and Green belt section where she held down her Dutch opponent Ayomi Bisdijk with relative ease to take Gold

Will Brown and Oliver Platt took Bronzes in the boys red and yellow belt section at u38 and u42 respectively after some very tough fights. Archie Platt just missed out on a bronze in his last fight in a group of 21 competitors. Also competing were Max Brown .. Felix Berning ..  Alwyn Clarke

BEDMINSTER JUNIOR OPEN

At the Bedminster under 16 open competition held in Bristol on Sunday 6th June. Martin Woodhams had some tough matches and after a long day came away with a well deserved Bronze medal


SAMURAI GREEN AND BELOW

At the Samurai green belt and below competition held in Kidderminster on Sunday 6th June. Oliver Platt took Gold at under 38kg and Archie Platt won Silver in the under 30kg. What a busy but successful weekend for them


NHC MINIMON

At the NHC minimon for red and yellow belts held at High Wycombe on Saturday 5th June. Mollie Game won Gold at under32kg. Oliver Platt took Gold at under 38kg and Archie Platt won Silver in the under 30kg. Adam Holloway fought extremely hard  gaining valuable experience

BRITISH OPEN

On the weekend of 15/16 May the British Open was held at K2 in Crawley. Pyrford had 2 players taking part. Alwyn Clarke at u73kg and Neil Schofield at +100kg fought extremely hard but as 2 of the younger competitors in this premier event neither managed to progress through the first round. It was important for them to be taking part to gain the experience at this level.

SOUTHERN AREA INTERCOUNTIES

On Saturday 9th May the southern area intercounty team championships was held in Gillingham. Teams from Surrey,Sussex, Hampshire and Kent competed against each other. Pyrford had several players representing Surrey.

Martin Woodhams was part of the boys team that took Bronze. In the girls team that took Silver we had Megan Fidge .. Elizabeth Jamieson .. Sarah Benktander .. Gabriella Giles. And representing Surrey Men and taking the Silver medal was Felix Berning and Henry Dean

IAPS TOURNAMENT – HIGH WYCOMBE

On Saturday 8th May at High Wycombe Will Brown took Gold in the IAPS championships in his category winning all 5 contests by Ippon


DAN GRADE THEORY SUCCESSES

On Sunday 2nd May at Amersham 3 Pyrford Judoka passed their Dan grade theory. Felix Berning and Michael Dean both passed their theory for their 1st Dan. Both have a little way to go with the competition points yet but are well on their way and its excellent to get the theory done. As soon as they reach 100 points (or complete a line up) they will be entitled to wear a Black Belt

Alwyn Clarke passed the theory for his 2nd Dan. Having already won the points needed in competition he is now a 2nd Dan. Quite an achievement at just 17


PETERBOROUGH OPEN

On Sunday 25th April at the Peterborough age banded tournament Oliver Platt won the Bronze medal in his category


NORTHERN IRELAND OPEN

On Saturday 24th April at the Northern Ireland Open held at the Queens University in Belfast Alwyn Clarke took the Bronze medal in the under 20’s event at under 73kg. He first beat Uladzislau Vaniukevich and then Jack Smith. The semifinal was a marathon 7 minute contest with Alwyn missing out to David Logan on flags after golden score ended level. He then won another marathon contest for the bronze against Liam Ashton-Farr after another 7 minutes In the senior event he first beat Robert Morrow from Northern Ireland before losing a tough match to Danny Harper from Kendal by a yuko score. He then missed out by a Yuko to David Logan from London in the repecharge

Neil Schofield took 2 Bronzes. First in the under 20 years +81kg group and then in the +100kg group for men

SURREY JUNIOR AND SENIOR TRIALS

On Sunday 18th April Pyrford had a massive 26 players take part in the Surrey Trials. All trying to qualify for the Surrey team for the Intercounties. Everybody fought extremely well with bags of experience being gained. Results are as follows

HIGH WYCOMBE DAN GRADING

At the National Dan grading held at High Wycombe on Saturday 10th April Michael Dean almost completed his line up just missing out in the last contest. He came away with a massive 40 points. Felix Berning also did extremely well in his first competitive outing since a shoulder injury last year. He won a further 20 points towards his 1st Dan

EASTER JUDO COURSE

Our annual Easter Judo course was held from 6th – 9th April at Pyrford. It was attended by over 30 judoka split between 2 classes. 13 new players tried the sport for a week and so far 7 have joined the club as new members. Hope you all had fun

BRITISH SCHOOLS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Saturday 20th March several Pyrford judoka were competing in the British Schools National Championships held in Sheffield. Max Brown put in a very good performance to take 5th place in a very competitive under 50kg group. Gabriella Giles also took 5th place in the u57kg group. Ben Ridler made a good attempt in the under 38kg group but didn’t progress to the later rounds. Well done to everyone that took part

SOUTHERN AREA AGE BANDED TOURNAMENT

On Sunday 14th March several Pyrford judoka were competing in the Southern Area Age banded tournament held at the K2 in Crawley. In the under 38kg group for 8 and 9 year olds Will Brown won all of his contests in his category to take the Gold medal. Oliver Harding won Gold in the 10 and 11 under 60kg. Lucy Maurer took Silver in the 12 and 13 under 36kg category.  Max Brown had a very tough group in the u55kg group for 14 – 17year olds but still came through with some nice Judo to take the Bronze medal. Rebecca Menhennet had loads of contests to finish with 5th place. Well done to everyone.


GB CADET TRIALS

On Saturday 13th March Michael Dean was selected to represent England at the trials for the European Cadet Championships. Held in Kendal this was a really tough event with the 4 top English and 3 top Scottish players taking part. Mike’s 1st pool being refought. He had 7 matches to eventually take a well earned 4th place

On Sunday 28th February  Oliver Platt took the Bronze medal in the under 42kg red and yellow belt competition held at Bishop Challenor School. Archie Platt had 5 tough matches in the boys under 28kg group winning 2 but not quite making it to the medals

ENGLISH OPEN FOR UNDER 20’S

On Sunday 7th March  Alwyn Clarke competed in the English Open for Under 20’s. This was held at Kendal Judo Club. The under 73kg group is currently one of the most hotly contested categories in this age band in Great Britain. Alwyn  first beat Jamie Black from Clyde by a Waza-ari. He then had a tough match against Daniel Dunne from Edinburgh which he lost a very close referees decision after Golden score time ended with neither player scoring. In the repecharge Alwyn then faced Darren Wood from Scotland who stopped Alwyns progression with a yuko score.

COACH REVALIDATION

On Sunday 7th March  2 of the clubs coaches .. Ray Blythe and Graham Hoptroff attended one of the BJA’s coach revalidation courses at High Wycombe. All of Pyrfords coaches attend some form of coach education every year to keep up to date with current thinking


EUROPEAN CADET TRIALS

Michael Dean has been selected to take part in the BJA’s trials for the European Cadet Championships.The trials are for the top 6 players in the country in each weight category aged 15 and 16. To be held in Kendal this will be a tough proposition with Michael being one of the younger players in the group


HENRY GETS BJA INSTRUCTOR AWARD

On the weekend of 27/28 February Henry Dean passed his BJA instructor award at High Wycombe


BLACK BELT FOR HENRY

At the South Coast kyu and dan grade competition held in Worthing on Sunday 21st February. Henry Dean won 30 points towards his Dan grade. He only needed 14 !! He also took the Silver medal at the competition

Having already completed his theory for his 1st Dan he can now wear his belt ( subject to confirmation by the Dan grade registrar )

Well done Henry .. really well deserved .. congratulations

NORTH WEST AREA OPEN

At the North West Open age banded tournament held in St Helens on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st February Alwyn Clarke had a great day winning Gold in an extremely tough u73kg D band group. He first beat Liam Sconnell from Kilarney with a hold down. Then Craig Hutchinson from the Army with another hold down for waza-ari. This was followed by a Yuko win in golden score against Scott Carson of East Kilbride. In the semi-final he threw Danny Finney from Camberley for Waza-ari to set up a final against Caoimhin Thompson from Ireland, who had already beaten Frazer Chamberlain and Taylor Bell on route to the final. After a very tough match Alwyn won on penalties in Golden score

 Elizabeth Jamieson moved up a weight to under 36kg. She had a great start throwing her first opponent from Furness in Cumbria for Ippon, followed by the same against Eva Thomas from Pinewood. In the semi final against Freya Harild from Parkwood in Kent she executed a neat turnover to hold her opponent down. In the final against Mollie Seymour from Newburn in the North East the weight difference showed when she was thrown for Ippon. This gave her an unexpected Silver medal in this new weight group.

 Michael Dean had some very tough matches but gave a good account of himself losing out to the Gold and bronze medallists in the C band under 73kg category

17 MORE POINTS FOR HENRY

At the National Dan grading held at High Wycombe on Saturday 13th February Henry Dean won another 17 points towards his Black Belt. He has already passed his theory examination and now needs just another 16 points ( 2 wins) to get his 1st Dan .. watch this space


BRISTOL CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

At the Bristol Classic tournament on Saturday 6th February Martin Woodhams took part having 2 tough matches against the Silver and the Bronze medallists. No medals this time but again, valuable experience gained


MIDLAND AREA OPEN MEDALS

Pyrford had 4 players competing in the Midland Area age banded championships on 30th / 31st January.

Elizabeth Jamieson had a great day in the A band under 32kg winning her first three contests in  combined time of less than a minute. She then proceeded to hold down current National champion Olivia Piechota to take the Gold medal.

Alwyn Clarke took a really well earned Bronze medal in the D band under 73kg as did Jack Blythe in the +100kg D band

Michael Dean won 3 out of his 5 matches to take 5th place in the under 73kg C band in another very tough group

All of the above players (except Elizabeth in the youngest age band) will have earned ranking points towards England squad selection for 2011
